From Samples to Hits: Riding the Wave of Music Tech
Throughout human history, music has been a core element of our existence. It is an art form that predates language itself. One that communicates our emotions and passions in a way that transcends the need for language by speaking directly to our hearts. So, how about we delve a bit deeper into the tech that is used to produce the chart-topping hits that shape the musical landscape?
The Technological Boom
Home Studios
Due to advancements in technology, a professional recording studio is now unnecessary to make music. All you need is a computer and a microphone to start writing your own songs that will top the charts tomorrow. As your capabilities and experience grow, you can deck out your home studio with various types of equipment like audio interfaces, MIDI controllers, and synthesizers; buying real instruments and acoustic treating your room to better isolate your singing and block out outside noise are other ways of improving your home studio; the possibilities are endless. Many artists have since adapted to recording in their own home studios. An amazing upside to this is the fact that we are most comfortable in our own homes, and as such, our creative capabilities are at their full potential. So what's stopping you from writing your very own songs?
Digital Audio Workstations (DAW)
Digital audio workstations, or DAWs for short, are the backbone of the modern music-production process. These software platforms enable musicians to virtually emulate the setup of a recording studio. DAWs like FL Studio, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live etc. offer tools for recording, editing, and mixing audio in any way desirable, such as multitrack recording, MIDI sequencing, and real-time audio processing and playback. These tools allow artists to bring their ideas and visions to life with insane precision and accuracy. Their intuitive interfaces and processing power have allowed artists to produce all sorts of songs and have given birth to completely new genres, EDM being a notable example. Famous artists like Daft Punk, Major Lazer, Marshmello, and many others have since released countless songs with just digital sounds and virtual plugins through the use of these software platforms, demonstrating the insignificance of real physical instruments in producing smash hits.Virtual Instruments and Plugins
Virtual instruments are software add-ons integrated within the DAW that replicate the sounds made by physical instruments, which can then be used for composing the beats and symphonies of a music project. For example, 808s drum kit, Spectrasonic Omnisphere, Fruity Reverb 2 etc. Producers can literally click and add the notes and chords that need to be played and it will automatically play the melody to perfection. Need the specific tone and sound of an instrument? No worries, just sample the sound by playing a few notes, and voilĂ , the virtual instrument sampler will perfectly replicate the exact sound of that instrument, which you can then use for your songs. Plugins are also a type of software add-on that allow producers to edit and change the way an existing sound sounds, such as adding reverb, changing the pitch, equalizing the frequencies, applying effects, etc. There are many premium and free virtual instruments and plugins available for anyone to download and use in their own projects to take their songs to the next level.
Auto-tune: A controversial tool
Auto-tune is a vocal tuning plugin with a controversial reputation in the music industry. It grants artists the ability to enhance their vocals digitally by changing the pitch, manually tuning out-of-tune notes, and adding different effects to the singer's voice. This has the power to make a mediocre vocalist sound amazing. So it isn't surprising many would consider the use of this tool as cheating. However, I would argue that this is far from the case. Firstly, Auto-tune, if used transparently, can introduce us to new creative outlets through the use of our voice. It inspires us to branch out and think of the human voice as an instrument, allowing us to do all sorts of fun things. Secondly, think of any modern artist like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, or anyone else, and I guarantee they use Auto-tune in their vocals. World-class artists like Post Malone, Travis Scott, Charlie Puth are brilliant examples of musicians who use Auto-tune in an artistic manner, and their style of music would simply not exist without the use of Auto-tune. So despite its controversial reputation, Auto-tune is here to stay, and I can't wait to see how artists use it in the future.
As technology progresses, the tools and equipment available to musicians will only get better. With the advent of AI, music is expected to undergo another revolution, with AI artists popping out with music created without any human input. It will certainly be interesting to see what direction singers, producers, and audio engineers take to push music production to the next level. The future is looking bright, and I can't wait to partake in it.
