Exploring Mindhunter and Delving into the Psychology of Serial Killers
"Butchering People Is Hard Work. Physically And Mentally. I Don't Think People Realize That. You Need To Vent. In Reality, When You Stab Somebody, They Lose Blood Pressure And They Leak To Death, Very Slowly"
What if I told you these words are quoted by an infamous serial killer named Edmund Kemper. Very calming for such spine chilling statement, no? Well, I first got to know about him in the show called "Mindhunter" which deals with many serial killers like him. The series follows two FBI agents, Holden Ford and Bill Tench along with Wendy Carr , a psychologist. Together, they form the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit and pioneer the development of criminal profiling techniques by interviewing and studying incarcerated serial killers to understand their motives and behavior. We are gonna talk about the show and the killers interviewed in it.
The narrative is driven by a mix of real-life serial killers and fictionalized cases, with notable figures like Edmund Kemper, Jerry Brudos, and Richard Speck making appearances. Through intense and often chilling interviews with these criminals, the agents seek to gain insights into the minds of serial killers, hoping to use this knowledge to solve ongoing cases and prevent future crimes. Iam mainly gonna talk about the killers that I found very interesting and scary.
Edmund Kemper : The Co-ed Killer!!!
During this 11-month murder spree, Kemper killed five college students, one high school student, his mother, and his mother's best friend. Edmund Kemper, at age 15, killed both his grandparents to "see what it felt like". Kemper revealed that he had a desire to kill his mother since he was 8 years old. Tragically, this desire became a horrific reality when he murdered his mother with a hammer while she slept. After the brutal act, he detached her head and took further disturbing actions, by placing her vocal cords in the garbage disposal, throwing darts at her severed head and screaming at it for almost an hour 💀
Edmund always had a difficult relationship with his alcoholic mother, who forced him to live in the basement. She was wary of him that he might hurt his sisters as he decapitated their dolls’ heads and forced his sisters to play ‘gas chamber’ with him. His parents were divorced, he tried to contact his father in his age but was kicked out.Edmund Kemper's psychological motives for his crimes were likely shaped by a combination of childhood trauma, a desire for control and dominance, sexual deviance, maternal fixation, fantasy, and underlying psychological disorders. His case highlights the complexity of serial killers' motivations and the importance of understanding both individual and societal factors in the study of criminal behavior. Police couldn't catch him on their own, Edmund apprehended himself and confessed to the crimes.
David Berkowitz : Son of Sam
It was from the summer of 1976 to the summer of 1977 when Berkowitz (better known as the 'Son of Sam' )began to terrorize the residents of New York City. With a revolver, he managed to kill six people and injure a lot more—and thus began one of the biggest manhunts NYC ever saw. His first victim, 18-year-old Donna Lauria, was killed in the early morning of July 29, 1976. Berkowitz was actually the one to dub himself Son of Sam, and by some weird version of events, the moniker stuck. The nickname was first used in a letter he wrote to the police, and it was written in extremely upsetting all caps.
His childhood was…quite disturbing but wasn’t necessarily as disturbing as other serial killers’. during his formative years when Berkowitz was deemed a bully and became obsessed with normal kid things, like larceny and casually starting fires. You might be thinking: What? But the police actually confirmed this after obtaining Berkowitz’s diary, where he said he was responsible for starting 1,411 fires around New York City (lol)
In one of the weirder plot twists to the story (as if any part of this is normal), Berkowitz claimed to be taking orders from someone. Or rather, something. He actually claimed it was his neighbor’s dog Harvey who was giving out the commands to kill, and Berkowitz basically believed the canine was a demon. Fortunately, he admitted this to be a massive hoax, but um…WHAT??? Most of the people killed were female and had long, dark hair, which the police realized were all connected after thinking these were all just random shootings around the city.
Jerry Brudos : The Lust Killer!!!
Jerry Brudos was an American serial killer who operated during the late 1960s. He was known for his gruesome crimes, which included murdering at least four young women. Brudos was also involved in acts of necrophilia and mutilation. His crimes were motivated by a disturbing fascination with women's shoes and undergarments. Brudos was eventually apprehended, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment.Jerry Brudos was often referred to as the "Lust Killer" due to the sexual nature of his crimes and his fetishistic obsession with women's shoes and undergarments. He would stalk local women, knocking down or choking them into unconsciousness, and fleeing with their shoes. When he was seventeen, he abducted and beat a young woman, threatening to stab her if she did not follow his sexual commands. Brudos was arrested shortly after and taken to a psychiatric ward for nine months. There, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and extreme misogyny.
